Why Kanye West Will Never Be Good at Email Marketing

Let’s face it, Kanye West is many things: rapper, songwriter, record producer, entrepreneur, fashion designer and pompous jackass.

While Kanye OBVIOUSLY has to be a fairly intelligent human being – he’s also ONE of the most self obsesses narcissistic celebrities the world has ever known.

He’s famous for such wonderful contributions to society as:

Referring to himself as the top musician in the world. “I am the number one human being in music. That means any person that’s living or breathing is number two.”

Placing himself in the Bible??“I’m doing pretty good as far as geniuses go … I’m like a machine. I’m a robot. You cannot offend a robot … I’m going down as a legend, whether or not you like me or not. I am the new Jim Morrison. I am the new Kurt Cobain … The Bible had 20, 30, 40, 50 characters in it. You don’t think that I would be one of the characters of today’s modern Bible?”

Knowing the meaning of TRUE pain. “My greatest pain in life is that I will never be able to see myself perform live.”

I WISH I was making these up, but sadly I’m not…


So Why Would Kanye Fail at Email Marketing?

Simple, Kanye Loves Kanye – period.

Kanye spends so much time obsessing over Kanye he would not have the time to worry about anybody else.

In order to REALLY succeed with Email Marketing – you need to build a RELATIONSHIP with your list.  The best relationships Kanye builds are the one’s with his mirror! (That was funny right?…guys?…hello?)

This IS the man, after all who claimed that “I’m too busy writing history to read it”

Anyways, that aside – having a good relationship with your list is common sense, it’s part of the best practices of email marketing and just a good idea if you want to sell more of anything! 🙂

If you want to sell more – I mean REALLY sell more – you need to be credible and trustworthy in the eyes of your email list.

Here’s how you do build a solid relationship with your readers, in 3 easy steps:

1.  Take the time to build a GENUINE relationship with your list. 

Don’t just promote product after product, day after day.  Put some structure into the emails you send out.

See something motivational on facebook that touched you?  Share it!

Did you try a new marketing technique (paid or free) and get amazing results from it? Share it, write a step by step tutorial showing how – and send it to your list!

See a great video on youtube that made you laugh and warmed your heart? Share it!

Granted, it DOES help if it’s somewhat related to the particular niche you’re in – but even if it’s not it still shows your human side.

Here’s an example, I shared THIS video with my list a few months ago and got a TON of positive responses.

Seriously, watch this and try NOT to cry – I know I did and I’m okay with that LOL.  By opening myself up to my subscribers and SHARING with them the fact that It made me cry – it puts me on their level and show’s I’m human just like them.

Really – take 3 minutes and watch this, it’s an AMAZING commercial and really will change the way you think about life and giving to others. 

Do you think Kanye would cry if he watched it?

2.  Invite your list to email you with questions!

Now – this might scare some people, but I don’t care – it works!

I end MANY of my emails with something like this:

Now this might sound silly, or obvious – but the fact that I’m inviting people to email me, listing my personal email address AND stating that “I’m Real” shows my subscribers that i’m NOT some huge guru hanging out with the Gods – but again, I’m a real person just like them – and i’d love to hear from them!

Granted, most people WON’T email me – BUT even the one’s that DON’T instantly trust me more because they know they CAN email me, even if they don’t.  Make sense?

3.  Actually RESPOND to the emails you get. 

Yes, it might take some time out of your day – BUT it will elevate you from just a name and email address to a REAL PERSON who cares about their needs and struggles.  It will place you higher up in their minds, and they will like you more and be more open to listening to your suggestions or product recommendations.

I get emails no less than 2-3 times per WEEK with people thanking me for responding to their emails, or simply thanking me for sharing something motivational or helpful.

Seriously, it’s not hard; invite them to email you with any questions- RESPOND to their questions.  They’ll be amazed that you’re a real person.  I get this ALL the time – here’s just one of MANY emails I’ve receive and RECEIVE thanking me for caring enough to send out QUALITY and not crap!

I’ve seen people on my own list go from earning $0.00 online to their first $100, even their first $1,000 or $10,000 in many cases and it’s an amazing feeling to have a part in their success like that.

You’ll often hear people say that “the money is in the list” which sounds cute I guess, but I disagree.  If that WAS true, you could simply buy a list of 50,000 people, start blasting emails to them daily and bring in the big bucks.

Take the time to actually help people and get to know them.  Trust me on this, you’ll not ONLY make more income as a result of doing this – BUT you’ll have a growing list of FANS, not just subscribers.

I have people email ME a few days a week asking me for an affiliate link for random products they want to buy.

They certainly don’t HAVE to, but they do.

Why?  Easy – I give THEM so much value, they often want to reciprocate and return the favor to me!

This is what’s known as “the rule of reciprocity“, which says:

The reciprocity principle is one of the basic laws of social psychology: It says that in many social situations we pay back what we received from others. In other words, if John does you a favor, you’re likely to return it to him.

Do you see the power of this?

I certainly don’t ask people to do this, though it’s definitely flattering and very much appreciated.

It’s simple, build a list – build a RELATIONSHIP with your list and see how far you go!

    I saw this one on inbound.org, and because Brian Dean was the one sharing it – i figured it had to be good.

    I wasn’t disappointed! Great article, i will definitely come back here more often! The things you laid out are very simple to understand, yet so many people do the exact opposite.

    By the way, that commercial truly shows the power of reciprocity, you almost made me cry.
